Did you know that Santo Domingo was the settlement of the first Europeans on the island? In fact, it was the first place where Christopher Columbus landed on his voyage to the new world. Initially it was baptized as “La Nueva Isabela”, in honor of Queen Isabella the Catholic. Later, it was renamed in honor of Columbus's father, who was called Domingo.

You will also be interested to know that the first cathedral and the first castle in all of America were built there. Both are currently located in the colonial area of the city, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We recommend getting lost among its alleys full of architectural wonders from the 16th to the 20th centuries. These are the main points to visit:

-The First Cathedral of America or Primate Cathedral of America.
-The Alcázar of Colón, the first castle in America.
-The Museum of the Royal Houses, built by decision of the Spanish crown to house its main official institutions in America.
-The Columbus Lighthouse, inaugurated in 1992, as a commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.
